[voicetest-mways] Barsoom: Breakfast with the Jeddak

Dejah enjoyed her morning briefings with Jedwar Kan, far more than some thought appropriate.  There were many who wondered why they had not married in the last few decades, wondered why she had not given the cloak to him, but she had her reasons.  The Jeddak would be respected as a ruler in her own right.  And she still had the metal to back up that position.

Instead, she preferred his easy manner and his companionship as a friend and adviser.  Also, he was a damned fine chess player.  He knew her, knew her life.  He knew who she was and what she wanted for Helium.  For Barsoom.  He was brilliant, in his own way.  Despite the vague air of intoxication he cultivated.

She felt at ease with him.  That was a rare privilege for a Jeddak.

[Milliways] Sakura

She'd been awake for a few hours before him, and content to work on her schematics for the cabin before he woke.  Now, more than ever, she wants to break ground.  To make this thing real.  As real as any troth, as any expression of their commitment to one another in some gilded festival beneath the two moons.

That feeling, that longing for something tangible, simmers beneath her thoughts as she makes the first pot of tea for the day.  She uses the same electric kettle he brought to her room that first visit.  The same mugs, too.  They sit on a tray by the windowsill as she watches the morning ripen into day.  She looks out over the MIlliways grounds towards the meadow.

Hold on. There's something different.  Something new about the landscape below.  Is that snow?  No, it can't be. The remnants of the blizzard melted and disappeared days ago.  If it isn't snow, what is it?  She peers closer and draws a breath.

It's trees.  Flowering trees.

Pale pink blossoms as far as the eye can see.

She stares in wonder for a long moment, hands covering her mouth. She can't help herself. She tiptoes back to his side of the bed and bends to whisper against his ear. "My love. Wake up, there's something you need to see!"

[Milliways] White Upon White

He'd only left an hour ago.  Darkness had fallen and the storm outside was screaming and tearing at the building.  It was lunacy to go out in this weather.  But he was out there, and in only the clothes he'd put on this morning.  He and Edgar both.

They'd die out there, surely, if they didn't get a move on.

Woola whined at her, picking up on the desperation she felt crawling down her spine.  She'd put on her winter coat and boots, and taken the goggles bar had given her.  Ellen and Ysalwen were already waiting for her at the backdoor.  She handed each of them one of the electric lanterns Bar had provided.

"Are we ready?  Do we need anything else?"

[milliways] Lost for you, I'm so lost for you

[ cont'd from here ]

'More private' to her right now simply means away from people.  She takes his hand and leads him into the shadows, moving down the beach away from the music and the flickering light of the bonfire.  The white sand beach is flat here, gently sloping down to the waterline.  The quiet envelopes them, the susurration of the waves the only sound save for the occasional distant laughter.

[milliways] Run Home

After their run around the lake was ended by meeting Curtis's unfortunate partner in the whole body swap debacle, Dejah headed back to the room for a good long shower.  It was pure indulgence, standing under the hot water for so long, but she was allowed.  Here, anyway.  She'd be extremely mindful of bringing these bad habits back to Helium with her.

Her mind keeps going over the implications of Curtis having a double here.  A doppelganger who is genetically enhanced somehow.  Healthy and whole.  It makes her wonder if she's not doing enough to make sure he's healing.  Replacing the arm was one thing, but an extended period of malnutrition and captivity left other physical scars.

It is all a work in progress, one that will take many years to see gains.  Much like the Work back in Helium.  She makes a mental note to research the drawings he'd spoken of.  If there is any record of all of his time on the train, surely the library here will have it preserved.  Maybe something to help Edgar understand the whole picture.  Even if he can never forgive, the least he can do is to try to understand it.

She steps out of the shower and towels off, still turning over the human ideals of morality, of fairness and justice.  She tries to put the thoughts aside for now, knowing full well, she can easily drive herself mad if she doesn't.  Instead, she dries her hair and tries to clear her mind.

And not think about random magical spells that could rip her consciousness from her body and put into another's.  Yeah, comforting.

Midnight in the Jeddak's Garden

 [cont'd from here]

She holds him through the worst of it.  Holds him and rocks him gently, her mind racing to come up with some kind of solution, any solution.  There isn't one, she knows.  She can feel his agony as if it were her own, and in a way, it is now, isn't it?  She feels the tears on her cheeks and lets them fall.  Grief is the strongest enemy she's ever vanquished.

But she's done it before, and she knows she can do it again.

She doesn't know how long they've been sitting there when she notices a telltale ripple in the air.  It's just inches above the wood of her door.  It takes a moment to resolve, and before it does, she recognizes the portal and knows where it opens to.  She can smell the pimalias and the blessed cool of the moss trees beyond.  The night sky above Helium is crystal clear.

Gingerly she urges his gaze up.  Her voice is gentle and warm.  "Hey.  Can you smell that?"

[milliways] In the Still of the Night

Days like today, time moves strangely.

The morning's events had driven them into the darkest oubliettes of memory and they'd each needed help finding their way out. It had stretched and pulled them to pieces and they'd spent the rest of the day quietly putting each other back together. It was time well spent in her book, even if it meant napping away the afternoon. They were alone together and that's all either one of them really could handle at the moment.

The day finally shifts into twilight and her stomach rumbles. She opens one eye to peer up at him. He looks so much older than he did, even yesterday.

[milliways] Through Shadows Into Light

Tomorrow I'll tell you everything.

Tomorrow.  He'd left her earlier, assuring her he only needed to clear his thoughts.  He was doing this for her.  And for him, she would listen and try to understand.

She'd tried to read, but her thoughts kept coming back to their conversation and the shadow that loomed between them.  Eventually she'd cleared a spot in the floor and worked through all 108 forms of her sword kata.  When she was through, she was drenched with sweat and her mind was clear.  She showered and managed to get a few hours sleep.

When the light touched her windows, it found her wide awake and staring at the mural over her bed.  The pale light of Cluros and Thuria lingered in the silks like the memory of his kiss, his hands -- his hands around her waist.  She rose and dressed for the chill lakeside. Khakis over boots, a long sleeved blouse and a long sweater Bar insisted she try. It was soft as down and had pockets inside and out. She left her hair down. She was not Jeddak today. She was just Dejah.

And he needed her. That fact alone kept her nerves calmed. Perhaps her expression was a bit stern, but this was a battle she was walking into, wasn't it.

She headed down to the bar and saw him sitting at a table with Edgar. Something told her to wait for him. A moment later, he joined her, his expression as haunted as the first day she met him.

Immediately, before opening her mouth to say anything, she gave him a warm smile and slipped her hand into his.

[milliways] Through The Looking Glass

 [After this.]

Dejah wakes and eats her breakfast on the terrace, looking out over the city.  When she's done, she finds herself pacing the floor, waiting for the door to Milliways to show up again.

The moment the sun hits the far wall, it reappears in a shimmer of dust motes. Dejah smiles with relief.  She grabs up the copper-clad box with the data crystals, and a few of her notebooks.  She starts over the threshold, and at the last moment, she whirls around and grabs Curtis's hat off her pillow.

The whole place is bustling, so she looks for him in his usual place at the bar.

[oom] Regent's Quarters, Hall of Science, Helium.

The air tastes different in Helium. Even behind the walls of the city, she can feel the breath of the desert on her skin. She lightly touches each item on her desk: the pumping station schematics, the atmospheric sensor array data, the curriculum for the winter session, the trade agreements, John's sketchbook.

[M'ways] Room 1001

It was after dinner and she'd finished up her work for the day. She shook out her hand, stretched the muscles of her fingers, hoping that the tendon would stretch with it.  It hurt more and more with each passing day, but she had other things to worry about.  Curtis was supposed to meet her after he'd worked out and checked on Edgar.

That was two hours ago.  She finally broke down and touched two fingers to her bracelet.  It pulsed blue and she got the sense he was in his room.  Strange.  She touched it again, just to be sure.  No, he was there.  Alive and attached to the pendant.

She decides to go down and say hello, find out if everything's okay.  A few minutes later, she's knocking at his door.

"Curtis?"

[Daemon AU] Dejah's daemon Iudaan

Dejah's daemon is a Barsoomian feline called a sorak. His name is Iudaan (you-DAHN) and he's very much like a serval cat, only he has eight legs and blue blood. Soraks are highly intelligent problem solvers with a penchant for getting into mischief. They're also incredibly affectionate, fiercely loyal to those they call their own, and savage hunters of no small skill.

Iudaan, in particular, might actually be the reason behind the phrase, "curiosity killed the cat." He is curious about everything, and has been known to get himself in compromising positions because 'something looked fun'. Even when he's sleeping, one ear is cocked, gathering tidbits of information. That said, he loves to go swimming, he loves an unspoiled sunbeam, and he is often found sleeping under Dejah's feet. And when Dejah is meeting people she doesn't particularly like, he is not at all shy about baring his teeth and hissing. (Ask Sab Than about his eye patch, go on, I dare you.)

Dejah usually doesn't mind having a soul that's outside her body. She knows that being open and welcoming is better than the alternative, but she's cautious as well. Not everyone feels the same

Prodigal

After a long day in the forge, and a long night of pacing the corridors of the bar looking for Curtis, Dejah had come back to her rooms and tried to work on the prostheses.  She'd made significant progress, building the initial layer of isolates and imprinting the neurological signature she'd recorded the very first day onto the layer itself.  It took an incredible amount of focus and when she was done, she lay her tools on her work bench.  Bleary-eyed and exhausted, she made her way to the bed.

She didn't wake for many hours.  Not even the recurring image of Curtis's shy smile melting into the leering grin of Matai Chang could manage to stir her from sleep.  It was late in the day when she rolled over and peered at the window.  The sun was going down.  Or was it coming up? She couldn't tell.
